Saturday’s fillies’ classics had more effect on the TRC Global Rankings than the colts’ races because the entities involved could be found further down the classifications to begin with.
In Kentucky, Oaks winner Monomoy Girl’s jockey, Florent Geroux (gains 2pts, stays #13), is well known to the TRC algorithm, while her trainer, Brad Cox (also won the G3 Turf Sprint) is becoming increasingly so. He gains six points, moving up from #45 to #34.
Her sire, Tapizar (gains 4pts, up from #338 to #257), and owner Michael Dubb, Monomoy Stables LLC Et Al (new entry at #335 on 959pts) increased their standings sharply.
How Monomoy Girl won the Kentucky Oaks
At Newmarket, the 1000 Guineas, won by 66/1 shot Billesdon Brook, fell to a trainer who knows all about training a classic winner. But Richard Hannon (gains 4pts, up from #115 to #103) is still well short of his best position of #9 back in 2015.
By contrast, jockey Sean Levey reaches a new career high of #141 (up 24 places) following his gain of six points. Billesdon Brook’s sire, Champs Elysees (gains 7pts, #155 to #106) is nearer his career-best #101 of 2015.
A 66/1 shocker in Newmarket’s fillies’ classic
Outside the classic arena, there were riding doubles for jockeys Yusuke Fujioka, Tyler Gaffalione, Oliver Peslier, John Velazquez and Irad Ortiz, but the latter’s hugely talented brother, Jose Ortiz, was the only pilot to gain three wins, all at Churchill Downs - in the G1 Humana Distaff and Turf Classic, and the G2 Churchill Downs Stakes. He gains five points and is up one spot to world #8.
For his part, Fujioka was the top climber in any category this week, awarded 13 points for winning the G1 NHK Mile Cup at Tokyo and the G2 Shimbun Hai at Kyoto. He is up 45 places to #104.
Star trainer was American Chad Brown, the world #3, who landed two wins at Belmont and one at Churchill Downs, including a pair of G2s.
Amazingly, the 61 races added to our rankings this week were won by 61 different owners!
This wasn’t the case in the Sires’ category, though. There were doubles for Blame, Deep Impact, Fastnet Rock, Ghostzapper, Scat Daddy and Snitzel. This means that five of our top six sires were successful. The exception this time was Frankel.
