They are going to find it difficult to hold their places in the future now she has gone, but Winx's connections are riding high in the TRC Global Rankings after the all-time great mare’s farewell victory at Randwick on Saturday helped them to two awards in our Performers of the Week series.
TRC OWNER OF THE WEEK
Three more winners for Godolphin (+1pts, stay #1) confirming their resurgence to the top of the standings, but they were all at G3 level, which gives us an excuse to look elsewhere.
Who better to receive this award than Winx’s owners MAGIC BLOODSTOCK ET AL (+3pts, stays #4), who signed off her racing career with a third victory in the G1 Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes (see video below).
In so doing, Winx completed a winning streak of 33 races over four years and equalled Phar Lap’s record of 37 wins. Her owners, including Peter Tighe and Debbie Kepitis, have proved great ambassadors for racing during their mare’s career, notably the latter.
TRC TRAINER OF THE WEEK
Winx’s trainer CHRIS WALLER (+2pts, stays #8) is a clear winner here after a G1 hat trick at Randwick. The Australian #2’s horses also took out the Coolmore Legacy Stakes (Kenedna) and the Schweppes Sydney Cup (Shraaoh).
In light of this outburst of success on the second day of The Championships at Randwick, let’s update the TRC Global Rankingsfor data in 2019 only, in order to summarise the action so far:
Only James Cummings who we now rank as Australian #1, has exceeded Waller in our exclusive index of performance, expressed by points. We take the performance of every runner into account, but note here that Cummings is 19-105 (18%) compared with Waller’s 16-148 (11%).
Third in the table is Godolphin’s Charlie Appleby 14-40 (35%), who scores lower than the other two because volume counts as well as efficiency. (Other major factors that affect a competitor’s ranking include the strength of the opposition their runners have faced and the rarity value of the races they have won or run well in.)
Note that American Steve Asmussen also had a hat trick of winners this week, all at Oaklawn in Arkansas, the G1 Apple Blossom Handicap, and the G3 Fantasy Stakes and Count Fleet Stakes.
