Usually, it is the individuals who rack up a double or treble or better who win our Performers of the Week awards, but there are some big-race displays so good that they merit recognition on their own.
TRC JOCKEY OF THE WEEK
That was certaintly the case last Friday with the G1 Investec Oaks win of Anapurna in the hands of the outstanding FRANKIE DETTORI (+1, stays #5). To assert that the Italian remains as good as ever is like saying the Sun comes up every day.
After racing prominently, Anapurna did not have to go round a horse and did not have to accelerate past a horse when winning the Epsom classic. In terms of energy use, she expended less effort than either runner-up Pink Dogwood or third-placed Fleeting – both trained by Aidan O’Brien. Deep stamina enabled her to expose the former in the final furlong (see video below).
In 2019, 48-year-old Dettori has added eight more Group wins to his fabulous resume. The table of aggregated wins for jockeys across the world in 2019 shows how Dettori compares to his elite colleagues by this simple metric:
Dettori places second to Pink Dogwood’s rider Ryan Moore (+1pt, stays #1) in total wins in 2019 by riders with modal country ‘Great Britain’. Of course, the pair were also 1-2 entering the campaign.
