The Investec Derby at Epsom on Saturday was yet another triumph for the great Galileo, not just because he was the sire of the first (Anthony Van Dyck) and third (Japan) and four other runners. No less than 12 of the 13 in the line-up were either by him or his sons or grandsons – and the 13th was a grandson of his sister, All Too Beautiful. Yet none of this was enough to earn the Coolmore colossus one of our Performers of the Week awards.
TRC SIRE OF THE WEEK
The TRC algorithm expects a lot of Galileo, so much so that his achievements at Epsom gain him just two points (stays #2) in the sires’ standings. It’s the same in the case of #1 Dubawi, who produced another three winners but gains only two points.
Instead, the nod goes to the amazing FRANKEL (+4pts, #3 from #5), who sired not just G1 Investec Oaks winner Anapurna at Epsom – his first European classic scorer - but also G2 Prix de Sandringham scorer Obligate.
Frankel has, of course, featured heavily in these pages before. Let’s see where he stands in the table of aggregate wins by sires for racing in 2019 only:
Dubawi is now well clear of the pack in terms of total wins, extending his run from 2018. But Frankel’s returns continue to build.
It was announced that Anapurna is to have a short break to recover from her exertions at Epsom, but she should add to her sire’s total of wins when she returns. Given the deep stamina exhibited at Epsom, a race like the G1 St Leger at Doncaster in September could feature on her agenda.
