There’s a new world #1 jockey on the Thoroughbred Racing Commentary’s Global Rankings in the shape of William Buick, whose exploits last week were enough to overhaul James McDonald at the head of affairs.
Godolphin rider Buick, who has an unassailable lead in the British title race for 2022, was in prime form with a total of eight winners at Newmarket’s three-day Cambridgeshire meeting, where he recorded two trebles and a double.
Having landed a G1 double in Canada the previous weekend with Modern Games and Mysterious Night for his retainer Charlie Appleby, Buick enjoyed a G1 ‘spare’ on the Ralph Beckett-trained Lezoo, who landed the Cheveley Park Stakes on Saturday’s card on the Rowley Mile.
Not done there, the Oslo-born 34-year-old was also on the G1 scoresheet in Germany on Sunday when he partnered Appleby-trained Rebel’s Romance to beat Deutsches Derby winner Sammarco in the Preis von Europa at Cologne racecourse.
Joint-champion apprentice in 2008 with David Probert, Buick is sure to land his first senior title this year. Within the parameters of the championship, he has 147 winners to his name (as at Sept 27), compared to the 85 recorded by his closest pursuer Hollie Doyle.
He improved his points tally to 2084 (+28pts) last week on the TRC Global Rankings, claiming the top spot from Sydney-based McDonald (2074, -20pts). However, with the major skirmishes of the Australian season almost upon us, there could well be some further flip-flopping between the pair.
TRC Global Rankings are a principled hierarchy of the leading horses, sires, jockeys, owners and trainers in the world using statistical learning techniques and TRC Computer Race Ratings.
Updated every week, they are based entirely on the quality of performance of each individual's runners. As such, they can be compared to Racehorse rankings can be compared to similar exercises in other sports, like the golf world rankings or ATP rankings in tennis.
Charlie Appleby (2891pts) remains in #1 spot among trainers ahead of US-based Chad Brown (2797), while Champion Stakes-bound Baaeed (2342) remains top of the equine rankings from Flightline (2252), odds-on favourite for the Breeders’ Cup Classic after his spectacular Pacific Classic display.
