Secretariat’s Legacy calendar for 2025 showcases equine legend’s best offspring

Lasting legacy: proceeds from the 2025 calendar will benefit Secretariat Center, Old Friends and Maryland Horse Foundation

Many of Secretariat’s best offspring, including Horse of the Year Lady’s Secret and champion Risen Star, are featured in the 2025 Secretariat’s Legacy calendar.

This is the eighth and final edition of a Secretariat-themed calendar series that has already raised almost $39,000 for equine charities and for the second straight year, calendar profits are shared by the Secretariat Center and Old Friends. An additional share will benefit the Maryland Horse Foundation.

“It has been a wonderful seven-year journey, and the popularity of these calendars is a small reminder of just how much Secretariat means to fans even today, more than 51 years after his incredible racing accomplishments,” says writer/photographer Patricia McQueen, who was inspired by the Triple Crown winner and determined to celebrate his impact as a sire. Her book Secretariat’s Legacywas published last year.

“Here at the Secretariat Center, as we enter our 21st year of rehoming Thoroughbreds, I can think of no better name for our organization. This delightful calendar is a wonderful way to continue to celebrate Secretariat’s legacy,” adds Bill Nelson, executive director of the Secretariat Center.

The calendar series began in 2018 with the Living Legends theme honoring the last living Secretariats, and then transitioned to descendants of Secretariat’s important broodmares in 2022.

And to help make this calendar extra-special, McQueen dug deep into her photo archives to include a few images of these horses that have never been published before.

Featured in the calendar are Lady’s Secret, Risen Star, General Assembly, Tinners Way, Kingston Rule, Terlingua, Pancho Villa, Super Staff, Academy Award, D’Accord and Medaille d’Or.

It is also fitting that the farewell 2025 calendar also includes a Bob Coglianese photo of Secretariat at his Aqueduct retirement ceremony on Nov. 6, 1973.

McQueen reflects on her project over the years, saying: “I want to thank all the people who have made it possible to raise so much money for equine causes: the Secretariat fans who have supported the calendars with their purchases year after year; the owners of the horses that made up the Living Legends series, who allowed me wonderful access to those very special old Secretariats; the Tony Leonard Collection for donating photos of Secretariat for several years; and Coglianese Photos for donating the Secretariat photo for the 2025 edition.

“Finally, I want to thank the incredible Ron Turcotte, who continues to be generous with his signature to help good causes; since 2022, he has signed a limited number of calendars each year.”

• Unsigned calendars are now available for $25 each (plus shipping) at www.secretariatcalendar.com, which links directly to a page on Secretariat Center’s online store. Calendars signed by Ron Turcotte will be available soon. Older editions of the calendar may also be purchased, at a significant discount from the original price, while supplies last.
